Aqaba Port, seaport in Aqaba, Jordan
Aqaba Port is a seaport on Jordan's southern coast beside the Red Sea. It has 12 terminals managed by different companies to handle containers, chemicals, minerals, and passenger arrivals, operating continuously around the clock.
The port became a critical trade route in the early 20th century, especially after the Ottoman railway connected it to Damascus and Medina. In 2006, the port was relocated south of the city to accommodate larger modern vessels in deeper waters.
Aqaba Port has been a meeting point for trade and commerce since ancient times. The site was known in biblical times as Ezion-Geber and served ships connected to King Solomon's trading activities.
The port is not open for casual visits as it is a secure operational area with international safety standards. Visitors can view port activity from public viewing areas or arrange guided tours if available through local tourism authorities.
The container terminal is Jordan's only facility handling standardized freight containers and ranks as the second busiest on the Red Sea route. It can process around 1.3 million standard containers annually, showing the port's strategic importance for regional logistics networks.
