Port of Shanghai, Seaport in Zhoushan, China
The Port of Shanghai is a deep-water seaport in the Zhoushan archipelago, China, built on offshore islands in the East China Sea. It is connected to the mainland by the Donghai Bridge and handles large container ships at its Yangshan terminal.
Construction of the Yangshan deep-water terminal began in April 2002, after it became clear that the older Shanghai port could not receive large ships due to shallow waters. The project was developed through cooperation between Zhejiang province and Shanghai.
The port is not a tourist destination and is not open to the general public, as it is an active freight facility. Getting there from Shanghai requires crossing the Donghai Bridge, which generally requires a special permit or an organized trip.
The Yangshan terminal was built on the islands of Large and Small Yangshan, which were barely inhabited before port construction began. The water around the islands reaches depths of around 50 feet (15 meters), which is what makes the site workable for the world's largest container ships.
