Big Daddy Dune, Sand dune in the Hardap Region, Namibia
Big Daddy Dune is one of the tallest sand dunes in the world, rising in the Sossusvlei area of Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia's Hardap Region. Its sand is a deep red color, and one side drops steeply down to the white clay floor of the Deadvlei pan.
The dunes of the Sossusvlei area formed over millions of years as wind carried sand from riverbeds and the interior of the continent into the Namib Desert. Big Daddy grew where wind patterns allowed sand to build up particularly high over time.
The name Big Daddy was not officially given but came from the everyday speech of guides and travelers who used it to mean the largest dune around. From the top, the view down onto the white clay floor of Deadvlei is direct, with the dark silhouettes of dead camel thorn trees standing out against the pale ground below.
The climb usually starts from the second parking area and takes real physical effort because the sand is soft and the slope is steep. Setting off early in the morning helps avoid the worst midday heat and makes the walk back down more comfortable.
Running or sliding down the steep side of the dune from the top leads directly into the Deadvlei pan, turning the descent into a short and fun route rather than a long walk back. This direct drop into the pan is often what visitors remember most from the whole trip.
