Sugar hall, Non-profit organisation in Dunkerque, France

The Halle aux sucres is a non-profit organisation based in a former warehouse on the darse, the inner dock area of Dunkerque. The building was renovated by architect Pierre Louis Faloci and now offers open, shared spaces used for meetings, exchanges and collective learning.

The building was the last remaining trace of the goods trade that passed through the port of Dunkerque in the 19th century, when beet sugar was unloaded and stored there. It was later converted to preserve that memory while giving the space a new purpose for the city.

The Halle aux sucres welcomes associations, schools, artists and families, with free entry for all. The mix of people and activities that pass through gives the place a genuine sense of shared life, where very different groups cross paths on a daily basis.

The site sits right on the inner dock of Dunkerque and is easy to reach on foot from the city centre. Entry is free and the space is open to everyone, so no booking is needed for a general visit.

A large crack runs the full length of the building and serves as the main pedestrian entrance. Walking through it and up a gentle slope leads to a platform with a 360-degree view over the city and the port.
