The Branviel Forest, Forest in Ytrac, France
La Forêt de Branviel is a wooded area on the edge of Ytrac, a small town in the Massif Central region of France. The trees stand far enough apart that sunlight reaches the ground, and a network of marked paths runs throughout the area.
Part of the forest belongs to the municipality of Ytrac, which manages it actively. In recent years, logging work was carried out using draft horses to pull out trunks for the first time, replacing the heavy machinery usually used.
The Sentier de la Poésie is a marked trail that runs through the forest and invites visitors to pause at certain points along the way. At one stop, a so-called floroscope introduces local trees and plants, while a guessing game called "What am I?" is aimed at younger visitors.
There is a parking lot at the entrance to the forest, making it easy to start any of the trails on foot. The paths suit different levels, and the area stays open year round, even in colder or rainy weather.
During the logging works, local schoolchildren were invited to watch and touch the draft horses at work in the forest. The visit was part of a project run in partnership with the Office national des forêts, the French national forestry office.
