Château de Conros

The Château de Conros rises on a rocky hilltop above the Cère river, combining two towers with a multi-windowed residential section. The structure features a pavilion wing topped with a lantern roof and extensive stone coverings.

Construction began around 1130 under Astorg d'Aurillac, with 13th-century elements still visible in the cellars today. The building underwent major alterations during the Renaissance and Baroque periods that shaped its current form.

The residence displays a 15th-century fireplace relocated from another estate, adorned with paintings created by Italian artists. This decorated hearth reflects how medieval nobility furnished their homes with significant artistic works.

The castle remains private property and viewing is limited to the exterior from surrounding walking paths. The best vantage points are found along local trails that circle the estate.

The pavilion wing features an unusual lantern-topped roof that functioned as a dovecote, reflecting medieval nobility's tradition of raising pigeons on their estates. This design element shows how practical needs were woven into the castle's architecture.
