The Sylvester II statue stands on Cours Monthyon, facing the street in a standing pose. The figure wears a long robe and a papal tiara, with one hand raised in blessing and the other holding a pastoral staff. The sculpture is carved in stone and rests on a pedestal bearing the pope's name.

The man depicted was born in 946 and later served as pope from 999 to 1003. He became the first pope of French origin and shaped religious life in Europe at the turn of the millennium.

Gerbert d'Aurillac took his name from the town where he was born around 946, and the statue keeps that link visible in the public space. Local memory also credits him with founding the school that later became the monastery school of Saint-Géraud, where he is said to have received his first education.

The statue is located on a central square near the Museum of Art and Archaeology, making it easy to find. Hotels, restaurants, and shops surround the area, allowing visitors to combine their visit with other activities.

The man depicted acquired knowledge during studies in Spain where he learned Arabic mathematics and astronomy. This learning made him the most scientifically educated church leader of his era.
