João de Deus, Statue and memorial in Estrela, Lisbon, Portugal
The João de Deus statue is a stone memorial in the Estrela neighborhood of Lisbon, created by sculptor José Laranjeira Santos. It stands on a square stone base in a garden setting, depicting the honored figure in a calm, natural pose with restrained detail.
The memorial was inaugurated on 14 November 1996 to honor a 19th-century poet and educator whose reading method shaped how children across Portugal learned to read. In 1888, he was named General Commissioner of Reading Education, a recognition of the reach his work had achieved.
João de Deus was a poet and teacher who created a simple method to teach children how to read, published in a book called Cartilha Maternal in 1876. His name lives on in schools and streets across Portugal, and this memorial reflects the respect people still hold for his contribution to education.
The statue stands in a public garden in the Estrela neighborhood and can be visited at any time without restriction. The surrounding streets are easy to walk, and nearby cafes and other neighborhood landmarks make it a natural stop during a stroll through the area.
Although the memorial is described as made of stone, the figure itself was cast in bronze by José Laranjeira Santos. The sculptor chose a deliberately plain style, letting the character of the person stand on its own without ornament or grandeur.
