Bandstand in Jardim da Estrela, Bandstand in Estrela, Lisbon, Portugal
The Coreto do Jardim da Estrela is a round iron bandstand set inside the Jardim da Estrela, a public park in the Estrela neighborhood of Lisbon. It stands on slender metal columns that support a circular roof, with ornate cast-iron detailing visible on the underside of the canopy.
The structure was designed in 1884 by military engineer Soares de Lima and originally stood on a city street promenade. In 1932 it was relocated to the Jardim da Estrela, where it has stood ever since.
The bandstand is used for occasional concerts and events, drawing people who gather on the surrounding benches. It gives the park a social focal point that feels rooted in a long tradition of outdoor entertainment in Lisbon.
The bandstand is easy to reach on foot from any of the park's entrances and sits in a visible spot within the Jardim da Estrela. Visiting on a weekend afternoon increases the chance of catching a live performance.
The ironwork on the underside of the roof is easy to overlook from a distance but rewards a look from directly below. The level of detail reflects the craft that military engineers of the 19th century applied even to public leisure structures.
