Santos Garden, Park in Estrela, Lisbon, Portugal
Jardim de Santos is a small public park in the Estrela neighborhood of Lisbon, close to the busy junction of Largo de Santos. It has a triangular layout with tended grass, walking paths, wooden benches, and a large Bela-Sombra tree that provides shade on warm days.
The park was laid out in 1873, making it one of the oldest public green spaces in this part of Lisbon. In recent years the city council bought the site, had it renovated, and reopened it to the public after a period of closure.
A bronze statue of Ramalho Ortigão, a well-known Portuguese writer and journalist from the 1800s, stands among the trees. It was made by sculptor Numídico Bessone and placed here in 1957 by the city council.
The park is connected to a cycle path, so it is easy to reach by bike, and the paths inside are wide and flat. A visit in the early morning or late afternoon tends to be the most comfortable, when foot traffic is lower.
Along the edges of the park stand old lamp posts, some of which still run on gas while others have been converted to electricity. This mix is a rare survival of 19th-century urban infrastructure that most visitors walk past without noticing.
