Shadow Gardens, Seasonal garden in Metz, France
The Jardins d'Ombre are a seasonal garden on the Place de la Comédie in central Metz, open each year from summer through mid-October. The space is divided into themed zones with shaded areas under stretched canopies and trees, a pond, fountains, and a small citrus grove.
The garden on the Place de la Comédie is reimagined each year around a new theme chosen by the city. The current theme, Jardins d'ombre - Jardins d'eau, was shaped in response to recent dry summers and a broader effort to manage water more carefully in urban green spaces.
The Jardins d'Ombre are part of the Constellations festival, which brings art and nature together on the Place de la Comédie. Artists create works inspired by plant roots and water, placed directly among the plants so visitors encounter them while walking through.
The garden is free to enter and sits in the heart of the city, so it is easy to reach on foot from most central landmarks. Visiting in the evening is worth considering, as parts of the garden are lit up and the space looks quite different after dark.
A noria waterwheel, built by engineering students, pumps water to irrigate a small edible garden inside the space. None of the water used comes from the city supply: it is drawn from rainwater tanks and the pool of a nearby swimming facility.
