Douves Garden, Garden in Saint-Malo, France
The Jardin des Douves is a garden in the old part of Saint-Malo, laid out on the former moat of the town castle. Gravel paths wind between trees and flowers, and old stone walls surround the space on all sides.
The garden was created in 1880, making it the oldest in Saint-Malo. It was built on the site of the moat that once protected the castle and formed part of the town's defenses.
At the center of the Jardin des Douves stands a neo-baroque fountain whose sound carries across the garden throughout the day. It draws the eye naturally and gives the space its most recognizable feature.
The garden sits near the Porte Saint-Vincent and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. It is free to enter and works well as a short stop during a walk through the old town.
The garden was once renamed Jardin de la Légion d'Honneur, in recognition of the decoration awarded to Saint-Malo after the Second World War. Few visitors are aware of this name today, but it reflects a little-known chapter of the town's past.
