The Musée l'Organe is a contemporary art museum in Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d'Or, a small village near Lyon. The building opens onto a large outdoor area where sculptures made from metal, scrap, and found objects stand alongside painted walls and large-scale installations.
The site was a coaching inn in the 17th century, used by travelers crossing the region. In the late 1990s, artist Thierry Ehrmann took over the building and transformed it into an art space, a process that led to years of legal disputes with local authorities over unauthorized changes.
The name "L'Organe" refers to the idea of an artistic organ that voices many different ideas at once. Thierry Ehrmann sees the site as a place of ongoing creation, where no work is ever truly finished.
Entry is free, and the site can be explored on foot at your own pace. Wearing sturdy shoes is a good idea since the outdoor paths are uneven and some areas have rough or unpaved ground.
The site has been officially recognized in France as a work of art in its own right, giving it a form of legal protection. This status sets it apart from other art centers and helped secure its future after the earlier legal battles.
