Roman Quarry, Archaeological site in Es Mercadal, Spain
Carrière Romaine is an ancient quarry site near Es Mercadal on the island of Menorca, Spain. The rock faces still bear clear tool marks left by workers who cut stone for local construction.
The quarry was worked during the Roman period to supply stone for construction across the region. Over time it fell out of use and is now protected as an archaeological site.
Sturdy footwear is recommended as the ground is uneven and rocky in places. Giving yourself enough time to walk slowly lets you notice the tool marks and different rock textures up close.
The cut patterns in the rock show that workers used a technique of scoring parallel grooves to split off large blocks with minimal effort. In some sections of the walls, these grooves are still sharp and easy to read.
