Flowstone Fountains, Local museum and workshop in Saint-Nectaire, France

The Fontaines Pétrifiantes are a local museum and family workshop in Saint-Nectaire, in the Auvergne region of France, where natural mineral springs are used to turn objects into stone-like sculptures through calcium deposits. The visit takes you through an underground cave along the hot springs, then into the workshop where craftsmen shape and finish calcium artworks using two main techniques: casting in molds and surface crystallization.

The workshop was founded in 1821 by people who saw the potential of the region's volcanic mineral springs to create decorative objects. In 1922, Léon Papon was the first to open the doors to visitors, turning the site into one of the early craft workshops in France to welcome the public.

The craft of petrification has been passed down through seven generations of the same family, making it one of the rarest trades in France. The current master craftsman, Eric Papon, received the title of "Maître Artisan" in 2013, a formal recognition of his skill.

Guided tours last about an hour and are available in French and English, with departures running frequently during the summer season. It is worth checking opening times before you go, as they can vary outside the busy months. The site has parking for cars and coaches, and the grounds are accessible for visitors with reduced mobility.

Inside the underground cave, a waterfall of about 50 feet (15 meters) slowly builds up thick layers of calcium on any object placed beneath it. Over time, even a simple piece of fabric or a flower can be turned into a solid, stone-like form by the mineral-rich water.
