Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence, Technical University of Munich, Research centre and campus in Munich, Germany
The Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence, known as MIRMI, is a research centre and campus of the Technical University of Munich located on Georg-Brauchle-Ring in Munich. The buildings have a functional, modern design with large windows and labs set up for hands-on research into robotics and intelligent systems.
The Technical University of Munich established MIRMI to bring together research in robotics and artificial intelligence under one roof. Over the decades, it grew steadily and became a recognised name in European research, with projects funded by institutions including the European Union.
MIRMI hosts open days where visitors can watch robots move and respond to their surroundings. School groups and curious visitors regularly come to see how machines are built and tested in real lab settings.
MIRMI sits on Georg-Brauchle-Ring and is easy to reach by subway lines U1 and U7, which run frequently from central Munich. Parking nearby is limited, so arriving by public transport or bicycle is the most practical option for most visitors.
One research focus at MIRMI involves using aerial drones to carry out construction tasks in places too dangerous or hard to reach for people. Separately, researchers there have developed sensors that read nerve and muscle signals to make prosthetic limbs respond more closely to what the user intends to do.
