Gaswerk Moosach, Industrial heritage site in Moosach district, Munich, Germany.
Gaswerk Moosach was a large production complex with coal yards, oven blocks, gas and tar containers, and multiple industrial buildings. The site also included a dedicated railway station and technical workshops for maintenance and manufacturing.
The facility was built in 1909 to meet Munich's growing gas demand after earlier plants became insufficient. It operated until 1967, serving the city's industrial needs for more than 50 years.
The site functioned as a social hub for workers and their families, featuring recreational spaces alongside production areas. These facilities reveal how the company shaped daily routines and community bonds among its employees.
The site now houses the main office of Munich's city utilities and is being redeveloped into a bus depot and housing district. Not all areas are publicly accessible since portions remain operational or under construction.
In 1978, workers discovered a lost section of the historic Schrannenhalle iron framework buried at the site, part of a 19th-century market hall. The recovery revealed that important pieces of Munich's architectural past had been unknowingly preserved here.
