Munich Olympic Stadium, Sports venue in Am Riesenfeld district, Munich, Germany
Munich Olympic Stadium is a sports venue in the Am Riesenfeld district, built for the 1972 Summer Games. The tent-shaped roof consists of acrylic glass panels suspended from steel cables that sweep across much of the seating area and playing surface.
The stadium opened in May 1972 and served as the main venue for the Summer Olympics. It was the first large structure to use a suspended cable net roof and influenced architecture for decades afterward.
The facility regularly hosts major concerts, athletic competitions, and football matches, drawing thousands of visitors to experience its grand scale design.
Guided tours run from Thursday through Tuesday between 9 AM and 4 PM. On event days access may be limited, so checking the schedule before visiting helps avoid surprises.
The roof covers more than 800,000 square feet (74,000 square meters) yet weighs only around 3,000 tons despite its size. This lightness comes from the fine balance between the steel cables and the translucent acrylic panels.
