Green Bridge is a stone pedestrian bridge over the Motława River in the old town of Gdańsk, connecting the Main Town to Granary Island. Its metal railings have taken on a greenish tone over the years, which gives the structure its name.
The bridge was built in the 16th century to allow merchants and residents to cross the river. It originally had a drawbridge mechanism that let boats pass through, but this was removed over time following repairs after war damage.
The bridge sits right next to the Green Gate and the Long Market, making it easy to visit as part of a walk through the old town. It is open at all times and free to cross on foot.
The name of the bridge does not come from the color of its stones but from the nearby Green Gate, a monumental 16th-century city gate. This is unusual because most other bridges in the city take their names from the streets they connect.
