Kronoberg, Nature reserve near Växjö, Sweden
Kronoberg is a nature reserve near Växjö, Sweden, made up of forests, meadows, and small lakes. The landscape is mostly broadleaf trees like beech and oak, with open pastures running alongside the woodland.
The area was protected in 1996 and has been shaped by human presence going back to the Bronze Age. Ancient burial grounds from the early Iron Age are scattered across the reserve, alongside a cairn built roughly 3,500 years ago.
Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the paths can be uneven and muddy in places. A marked Culture Trail runs through the reserve and makes it easy to follow a clear route without getting lost.
Two storms named Gudrun and Per reshaped parts of the forest, leaving fallen trees that still stand today as a visible record of what happened. The reserve is also one of the few spots in the region where the Eurasian golden oriole and the greenish warbler can be spotted during warmer months.
