Al Bidda Tower, Office skyscraper in Doha, Qatar
Al Bidda Tower is an office skyscraper on the Doha Corniche in Qatar, rising 43 floors with a curved, twisting form that narrows as it goes up. The exterior is clad in steel and low-reflective double-glazed glass, which allows natural light to reach the interior spaces.
Construction began in 2006 and was completed in 2009, at a time when Doha was carrying out many large projects to reshape its skyline. The building was designed by GHD Group and was part of a wave of new towers that changed the look of the city's waterfront.
The tower houses an art gallery showing local and international works, open to visitors who pass through the building. An outdoor café nearby lets people sit with a view of the waterfront and watch the Corniche go by.
The tower sits along the Corniche, which is easy to walk along and offers views of the water the whole way. The building has a large underground car park, so visitors arriving by car can enter directly from below without going outside.
The building's shape is based on a hyperboloid, a curved geometry also used in power station cooling towers. This structural approach gives the tower a high degree of stability despite its height, which is unusual for a building of this type in the region.
