Al Corniche, Waterfront promenade in Doha, Qatar
Al Corniche is a seven-kilometer waterfront promenade that curves around Doha Bay in a crescent shape, connecting the city's modern towers with its traditional harbor. The route includes parks, dining spots, and the Museum of Islamic Art at its southern terminus.
The promenade was built starting in the 1960s through land reclamation projects along the bay, marking Qatar's rapid expansion after independence. It transformed the waterfront into a public gathering space that blends the city's traditional and modern elements.
The Museum of Islamic Art, designed by I.M. Pei, stands at the southern end of the Corniche, displaying extensive collections of Islamic artifacts and art.
The promenade is easily walkable with continuous paths, seating areas, and shaded spots along the route. Visit during cooler morning or evening hours, as midday temperatures can be quite intense in this region.
The wooden dhows anchored in the harbor can be chartered for sunset dinner cruises with the illuminated skyline as the main backdrop. These sailing vessels served as the only connections to other Gulf ports for centuries before modern shipping arrived.
