Tornado Tower, High-rise office building in West Bay district, Doha, Qatar
Tornado Tower is an office tower in the West Bay district of Doha, Qatar, rising 195 meters with a twisted glass facade that spirals upward along its full height. The building spans 52 floors of office space and stands as one of the tallest structures on the Doha skyline.
Construction of the Tornado Tower started in 2006 and was completed in 2008, a time when Doha was building much of its modern center from scratch. The tower was part of the broader development of West Bay, a district that was largely uninhabited land just a few decades earlier.
The Tornado Tower houses several international embassies, including those of Canada and Australia, alongside a campus of HEC Paris. This mix gives the building a cosmopolitan feel, with diplomats, students, and business visitors sharing the same entrance.
The tower sits in West Bay, a business district that is easy to reach on foot from nearby hotels or by taxi. As the building is primarily a workplace, public access is generally limited to the lobby and ground-floor areas.
The twist in the facade is not only a visual effect but also changes the way natural light enters the offices throughout the day, depending on the angle of the sun. This means that two offices on the same floor can receive very different amounts of daylight simply because of the building's rotation.
