The Musée du four de la poterie Kutani is a museum in Kaga, Japan, dedicated to the history and craft of Kutani porcelain. It sits on a historic kiln site within Kokutanino-mori Shinsui-koen Park, near the Kaga City Central Library.
Kutani porcelain began in the early Edo period, when a special stone suited for porcelain-making was found in the region, leading to the construction of the first kiln in Kutani Village. Production later stopped and was restarted at this site in 1824.
Kutani ware is known for its bold colors: green, yellow, purple, navy blue, and red appear on nearly every piece. The museum building itself is painted in those same colors, so the style is visible even before you step inside.
The museum offers hands-on workshops where visitors can shape clay on a pottery wheel or decorate a small piece with guidance from a craftsman. Going early in the day is a good idea, as these activities may have limited spots.
On the second floor of the museum there is a tea room called Sabo Kokutani, where visitors can sit with a warm drink and look at works by local artists. The room itself is furnished with Kutani pieces, so you can observe them up close in a relaxed setting.
