Küstenlandschaft Wismar-West is a nature reserve on the western edge of Wismar, along the Baltic Sea coast. It covers open meadows, a sandy beach with shallow water, and undeveloped shoreline facing Wismar Bay.
The coast west of Wismar was historically tied to fishing and trade, reflecting the city's long role as a port on the Baltic Sea. The area was later placed under nature protection, which has kept large-scale development away and preserved its open character.
The area is known among families for its lifeguard-watched beach and a playground right at the water's edge. Visitors tend to bring their own blankets and chairs, since there are no rentable sunbeds or umbrellas on the sand.
The paths through the reserve are flat and easy to walk, and they are accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Free parking lots are available near the beach, though they fill up quickly on weekends.
The water in Wismar Bay stays very shallow far from shore, so it is possible to walk out a long way without going under. On some early summer days, small jellyfish drift through the area, but they are harmless and do not affect swimming.
