Skinner Butte City Park, City park in Eugene, Oregon, US
Skinner Butte City Park is a large urban park along the Willamette River in Eugene, Oregon. It surrounds a prominent hill and contains walking trails, open lawns, a children's playground, and a basalt rock climbing area known as the Columns.
In 1846, Eugene Skinner and his family settled on the butte and built a cabin there, around which the city of Eugene eventually grew. The hill was later used as a basalt quarry before the park was officially dedicated in 1914.
The park is open year-round and leashed dogs are welcome; parking is available nearby. The road to the summit is closed to vehicles, so reaching the top means walking or cycling up the trail.
The basalt columns in the park, known as the Columns, are a former quarry site that is now used for rock climbing, with walls about 45 feet (14 m) tall. Volunteers have worked in recent years to improve the climbing routes and make the site more accessible to climbers.
