Eugene, University city in Willamette Valley, Oregon, United States
Eugene is a university city at the southern end of the Willamette Valley in Oregon. The settlement follows the McKenzie and Willamette rivers and includes different neighborhoods spread between forested hills and open valleys.
The settlement began in 1846 when a pioneer cabin was built here, growing from a small outpost into an incorporated city by 1862. The university arrived in 1876 and shaped the character and growth of the place through the 20th century.
The Saturday gathering brings together local makers, food sellers and musicians who share their work with visitors and neighbors. The community lives with a relaxed approach to daily life, favoring outdoor activities, cycling and a practical relationship with the surrounding landscape.
The airport connects travelers to major destinations along the West Coast, while parks and green spaces spread throughout the urban area. Bicycle paths cross many neighborhoods and help with moving between campus, downtown and residential areas.
The city hosts track and field competitions at Hayward Field, which played a role in the formation of Nike and gave the place its Track Town USA nickname. A high concentration of microbreweries per resident gives the town a brewing tradition that dates back to the early 1980s.
