McArthur Court, Historic basketball arena at University of Oregon in Eugene, United States.
McArthur Court is a basketball arena on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, in the state of Oregon. The seating rises steeply on three levels around the court, placing spectators very close to the floor and giving the building a compact, enclosed feel.
The building was designed in 1926 by architect Ellis F. Lawrence and served as the home court for the Oregon Ducks basketball team for many decades. Over time, the arena was renovated to meet the needs of a growing university sports program.
The name honors Clifton McArthur, the first student body president of the University of Oregon, reflecting the close bond between this building and the campus community. Beyond basketball, the venue has hosted concerts and other large gatherings that became part of student life over the decades.
The arena sits at the heart of the university campus and is easy to reach on foot or by public transit. The steep seating fills up fast during events, so arriving early gives you more time to find a good spot.
Construction was largely funded by students, each of whom paid a $15 (about 14 EUR) fee toward the building. When the loan was fully repaid, the university held a ceremony where the mortgage documents were burned to mark the occasion.
