Lapel pin tribute to the fight against AIDS, Sculpture in Madrid, Spain

Ruban d'hommage à la lutte contre le sida is a public sculpture in Madrid, Spain, shaped like a red ribbon. The bright red form is cleanly defined and easy to recognize from a distance.

The red ribbon as an AIDS awareness symbol was introduced in 1991 in the United States by the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus, a group of artists who wanted to express support for those affected. One of the people involved, artist Franck Moore, died from AIDS in 2002.

The red ribbon was designed in 1991 by a group of American artists to show solidarity with people living with HIV. In Madrid, the sculpture invites passersby to pause and think about those affected by the disease.

The sculpture stands in a public space in Madrid and is freely accessible at any time. A short stop is enough to take it in, as the work is compact and easy to view from multiple angles.

The shape of the red ribbon carries a hidden meaning: the upside-down V is said to stand for victory, and according to a tradition, the ribbon should only be turned right-side up once AIDS is defeated. The simple shape holds a message about the future within it.
