Oratory of the Caballero de Gracia, Neoclassical church on Gran Via, Madrid, Spain
The Oratory of the Caballero de Gracia is a neoclassical chapel on Gran Via in Madrid, built with a basilica structure supported by heavy granite columns. Its interior features a vaulted ceiling and maintains a simple, dignified design from the 18th century.
Juan de Villanueva designed this chapel in the late 1700s, creating an example of neoclassical church architecture in Madrid. Later, the northern facade had to be modified when Gran Via was developed and the building required adjustments to fit the new urban layout.
The oratory is dedicated to the Caballero de Gracia, a figure whose name defines the place and its spiritual purpose. Visitors today experience it as an active prayer space where daily worship and personal devotion continue.
The chapel is open daily and welcomes visitors during prayer times. Keep in mind this is an active worship space, so respectful behavior is important when you visit.
The chapel was strategically positioned on Gran Via and had to adapt its original architecture to integrate with the changing street. This makes it a striking example of how historic buildings endure within modern urban development.
