Casa Matesanz, Eclectic architectural building in Gran Via, Madrid, Spain

Casa Matesanz is an eclectic-style building on Gran Via in Madrid, with a facade that displays different ornamental elements across its several floors. The composition is organized in clearly readable sections, with each level carrying its own decorative treatment.

The building was designed in 1923 by Antonio Palacios Ramilo at a time when Gran Via was being rebuilt as a modern urban boulevard. Many of the surrounding buildings date from this same period, which gave the street much of the look it still has today.

The facade brings together design elements from different European building traditions, placed side by side in a way that is easy to read from the street. Each floor has its own visual character, and passers-by can pick out the decorative details without entering the building.

The building sits on Gran Via, one of the most accessible streets in Madrid, with several metro stations a short walk away. The best way to see the facade is from across the street, where you can take in the full height of the building at once.

Antonio Palacios Ramilo also designed the Palacio de Comunicaciones, one of the most recognizable buildings in Madrid, which means two of the city's most visible landmarks came from the same architect. Seeing both on the same walk through the city center gives a clear sense of how much one designer shaped this part of Madrid.
