Écomusée du marais breton vendéen Le Daviaud, Ecomuseum in La Barre-de-Monts, France

The Écomusée du marais breton vendéen Le Daviaud is an ecomuseum in La Barre-de-Monts, a small town on the Atlantic coast of France, dedicated to life and work in the Vendée marshlands. It occupies an old farmstead with buildings from past centuries, including thatched houses, barns, and workshops where tools, boats, and everyday objects are on display.

The Vendée marshlands have been inhabited for centuries, and the people there learned early how to use the channels, reeds, and tides for their everyday needs. The museum was established on one such old farmstead to keep this local way of life visible and pass it on to younger generations.

The word "maraîchin" refers to both the people and the way of life of the marshlands, and this term runs through the whole visit. Visitors can see traditional costumes from the region, sometimes worn during special presentations.

The museum is open mainly during the warmer months and works well as an afternoon visit, since many of the demonstrations take place at that time of day. Those coming with children should plan for enough time, as there are hands-on activities that make a longer stay worthwhile.

One of the lesser noticed parts of the visit is the "saut de ningle", a local tradition where a long pole is used to cross the water channels, a technique that was once an everyday skill in the marshlands. Seeing this demonstrated in person makes it easy to understand how people moved from one bank to another across this flat, wet terrain.
