Malecón Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in Murcia, Spain
The Malecón Botanical Garden is a botanical garden in central Murcia, Spain, located along the Paseo del Malecón near the Segura River. It features winding paths, benches, a mix of local and exotic plant species, and open green spaces.
The garden's origins go back to 1845, when teachers from the local Institute requested the grounds of a former convent to use for practical lessons in agriculture and natural history. Over the 20th century it was damaged during the Civil War, later restored, and took its current form in 1974.
The Malecón Botanical Garden, also known as the Jardín del Malecón, sits next to the promenade that shares its name. Small signs along the paths give information about the plants, so visitors can learn as they walk.
The garden is free to enter and open most days, making it easy to fit into a walk around central Murcia. It sits close to the old town and can be reached on foot from several nearby landmarks.
The garden still has a baroque entrance gate that dates from the time of the original convent grounds. During the 1980s, the garden briefly housed a small zoo, which was later moved to another location.
