Toriihira Yamabiko Park is a large public park in Okaya, Nagano Prefecture. It sits at around 3,300 feet (1,000 m) above sea level and includes open lawns, a children's play area, a dog run, sports facilities, and a small stream and wetland zone.
The park was developed by the city of Okaya to give residents access to nature in the highlands above the lake. Over time, leisure facilities were added, turning it into a destination for day trips from the surrounding area.
In summer, the park runs a summer bobsled ride where visitors slide down a track on the hillside. This is one of the most popular activities for families with children visiting the area.
The park is generally closed on Tuesdays, with the day off shifting to Wednesday when Tuesday falls on a public holiday. The restaurant and barbecue area are only open on weekends and public holidays, so it is worth checking before you plan a meal there.
On clear days, the view from the park takes in Lake Suwa far below, even though you feel surrounded by forest. The elevation also means the air here stays noticeably cooler than in the town below, even in the middle of summer.
