Okaya, Industrial city in Nagano Prefecture, Japan

Okaya is a city in Nagano Prefecture situated in the Suwa Basin between mountain ranges, with factories and residential neighborhoods that form its physical character. Rail and bus lines connect all areas of the city, making movement between districts straightforward.

The settlement became an official city in 1936 after centuries as a farming region, and textile mills soon became the foundation of its economy. Over time, production expanded beyond textiles to include other manufacturing sectors that continue today.

The summer fireworks festival brings crowds to the lakeshore, where locals and visitors gather to watch the colorful displays reflected in the water. Throughout the year, smaller celebrations weave through the community calendar and shape how people connect with each other.

The main train station offers direct service to larger cities, making arrivals and departures straightforward for most travelers. Buses run regularly throughout all neighborhoods, so exploring without a car is easy and practical.

Several traditional temples and mountain trails exist throughout the city, nestled among the factory buildings and residential areas. This blend of industrial and natural spaces creates a rhythm that many visitors find unexpected.
