Gofuku-ji

Gofuku-ji is a Buddhist temple nestled in the forested hills southeast of Matsumoto, situated at approximately 1000 meters (3300 feet) above sea level. The grounds feature a traditional wooden gate and grand entrance structures that lead toward the main hall.

The temple was established when Buddhist scriptures arrived from the Tang Dynasty, reportedly carried by two oxen that stopped at Hachibuseyama Mountain. This event marked the beginning of this significant spiritual site in the region.

This temple serves as an active center for daily worship and houses a statue of the goddess Kanzenon that holds deep meaning for local devotees. Visitors can witness ongoing spiritual practices as they walk through the halls.

The temple is located in a remote spot in the forested hills and requires personal transportation such as a car or bicycle to reach it. It is wise to check road conditions beforehand, as accessibility can vary depending on the season.

The temple is part of two different pilgrimage routes that wind through the Shinshu region and connect visitors following ancient religious paths. This dual membership makes it a special junction point for pilgrims from different traditions.
