Gofuku-ji, Buddhist temple in southeast Matsumoto, Japan
The temple complex sits 1000 meters above sea level, featuring a traditional wooden Kabuki gate leading to a grand Sanmon gate before the main hall.
Founded in 756, the temple received Buddhist scriptures from Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty, carried by two cows that stopped at Hachibuseyama Mountain.
The temple conducts daily prayers for the deceased and contains a statue of Kanzenon Bosatsu created by Prince Shotoku in 616 AD.
Visitors require personal transportation to reach the temple, as its remote location in the forested hills makes access challenging without a car or bicycle.
The temple stands as part of two distinct pilgrimage routes: the Shinano and Shinshu Chikuma Thirty-three Kannon Pilgrimages.
