兔川寺

Zenkyu-In is a Buddhist temple in Matsumoto with a collection of statues and carved figures displayed in various locations throughout its grounds and buildings. Within the main hall and on the adjacent cemetery grounds sit several religious artworks that give shape to the spiritual character of this place.

The temple was relocated to its current location in 1656 following orders from feudal lord Mizuno Tadahito. This move marked a turning point in the region's religious organization and development.

The temple contains carved figures of Buddhist saints, devotees, and deities displayed throughout its halls, showing different aspects of local spiritual belief. These sculptures reflect how people expressed their faith through religious art.

The temple sits in the Fukashi neighborhood about a ten minute walk east of Matsumoto Station, making it easy to reach on foot. Its central location allows you to visit as part of a broader tour of the city.

The temple houses a large bronze bell cast in 1699 that remains the only surviving bell from the Edo period in Matsumoto. This rare bell gives a glimpse into the metalworking techniques and craftsmanship of that era.
