Matsumoto Baseball Stadium, Baseball stadium in Matsumoto, Japan
Matsumoto Baseball Stadium is a baseball stadium in Matsumoto city, Nagano Prefecture, featuring natural grass in the outfield and a two-story grandstand. Six lighting towers on site make evening games possible, and covered indoor training areas with pitching machines are also available on the grounds.
The stadium was built in 1924 as part of an imperial commemoration project and opened in 1926 under the name Nagano Prefecture Matsumoto Baseball Field. From that point on, it became the main venue for baseball across the region for the rest of the 20th century.
The stadium regularly hosts school tournaments that draw families and supporters from across Nagano Prefecture. On match days, the stands fill with students and parents in a way that feels more like a neighborhood gathering than a sporting event.
The stadium is in Matsumoto city and easy to reach by car, with parking available on site. Visiting in the evening is also a good option, as the lighting towers ensure clear visibility across the whole field.
During a professional doubleheader played here in 1947, a total of 13 triples were hit in a single afternoon, a figure that stands out even by the standards of Japanese baseball history. No comparable single-day total from one venue has matched that count since.
