Old Higher School Museum

The museum occupies a former school building in Agata and documents how Japanese educational institutions developed from the 19th century onward. The collection includes artifacts, documents, and photographs that show the changes in the school system.

The First Higher School was founded in 1886 and played a key role in modernizing Japanese education. After World War II, school reforms took place and the museum opened in 1993.

The school building reflects Western educational influences that Japan adopted during the Meiji period. You can see in the rooms how foreign languages and classical subjects were taught here.

The museum sits within Agata-no-mori Park and is easily reached on foot. The facility is well signposted indoors and offers guided visits for guests.

Nine Japanese prime ministers attended this school and later shaped the country's political leadership. This surprisingly high number shows how much influence the institution had on Japan's leaders.
