Old Higher School Museum, Education museum in Agata-no-mori Park, Japan.

The museum occupies a former school building in Agata and documents how Japanese educational institutions developed from the 19th century onward. The collection includes artifacts, documents, and photographs that show the changes in the school system.

The museum opened in 1993 in Agata-no-mori Park as a branch of the Matsumoto City Museum. Its predecessor, a memorial museum for the old Matsumoto Higher School, had been set up in 1981 inside the neighbouring school building, which served as a faculty building of Shinshu University until around 1970 and now houses the Agata-no-mori Cultural Hall.

The school building reflects Western educational influences that Japan adopted during the Meiji period. You can see in the rooms how foreign languages and classical subjects were taught here.

The museum is a 15-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station, inside Agata-no-mori Park. It opens from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m., and closes on Mondays (or the next day if Monday is a holiday) and over the New Year period. Admission is free.

The museum opened in 1993 in Agata-no-mori Park, succeeding a memorial room set up in 1981 inside the former Matsumoto Higher School building next door. That neighbouring schoolhouse, used as a Shinshu University faculty building until around 1970, now serves as the Agata-no-mori Culture Hall.
