Old Datca Houses, Historic houses in Eski Datça, Turkey
The Old Datca Houses are low stone buildings lining the narrow lanes of Eski Datça, a small village near the town of Datça on Turkey's Aegean coast. The structures have thick walls, small wooden windows, and simple courtyards often shaded by fig or almond trees.
The settlement traces back to early Byzantine times and served as the main hub of the Datça peninsula for many centuries. In the 19th century, fishing and farming families filled these houses, but the growth of the coastal harbor gradually drew people away.
The lanes are too narrow for cars, so exploring on foot is the only real option. Visiting in the early morning keeps the experience calm, as the stone walls catch the light well at that hour.
The Turkish poet Can Yücel spent part of his life in one of these stone houses and drew inspiration from the village for his poems. His former home is now open to visitors as a small museum.
