Soğanlı Ören Yeri, Archaeological site in Kayseri province, Turkey

Soğanlı Ören Yeri is an archaeological site set in a valley near the town of Yeşilhisar, in Kayseri province, Turkey. The valley contains around 50 rock-cut churches along with cave dwellings, pigeon houses, and cone-shaped rock formations carved into the steep slopes.

The area was already settled in Roman times, when the cave openings in the rock slopes served as burial sites. From the 4th century onward, it became a Christian monastic center, with churches and hermit cells carved into the rock through the Byzantine period.

Women from the nearby village make small cloth dolls known as Soğanlı Babies. These handmade dolls are sold at markets across the Cappadocia region and remain a visible part of everyday village life.

Comfortable shoes are a good idea since the paths are uneven and some church entrances require stepping over slopes or bending. Only a few of the churches are open to visitors, so it helps to ask locally which ones are accessible on any given day.

Some churches still have frescoes from the 10th to 12th centuries, and crosses carved directly into the stone walls are still visible in several spots. The pigeon houses cut into the rock were used not just for food but also for communication, making them one of the most practical features of the valley.
