Panorama 1453 History Museum, History museum in Istanbul, Turkey
Panorama 1453 History Museum is a history museum in Topkapı City Park in Istanbul, built around the Ottoman conquest of the city in 1453. At its heart is a full 360-degree circular painting showing the siege, surrounded by objects such as cannons and gun carriages placed in front of the artwork.
The museum opened in 2009, created by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality to mark the conquest of Constantinople on 29 May 1453. The building had previously served as a military school before being repurposed.
The museum sits inside Topkapı City Park, a large green space that was once a bus terminal. Many visitors combine a walk through the park with their time inside the museum.
Visitors enter through a spiral staircase that leads down to the main viewing platform, where the circular painting wraps around the full space. Labels are in Turkish and English, and a visit typically takes about an hour.
The panoramic painting was created by a team of eight artists led by Haşim Vatandaş, and the work took about three years to complete. Sound effects were added to the space so visitors can hear as well as see the battle scene around them.
