Munzur gözeleri.ovacik, Natural spring park in Ovacık district, Turkey
Munzur Gözeleri Ovacık is a natural spring park in the Ovacık district of Tunceli province, Turkey. The springs emerge from the slopes of the Munzur Mountains at around 1500 meters elevation and form the headwaters of the Munzur River.
The area around the springs has been used by surrounding villages for generations and has long been considered a sacred site in the region. In 2001, it received first-degree natural site status, which restricts construction and large-scale development.
The springs hold deep meaning for local Alevi communities, who have long seen the water as sacred. Visitors today can still witness offerings, lit candles, and small ceremonies at nearby shrines like Düzgün Baba.
The site is reached from Ovacık via small local roads, and simple parking is available nearby. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the paths wind through trees and uneven rocky ground.
The water from the springs is bottled and sold as Munzur water, recognized in Turkey for its high quality. The river fed by these springs is also home to the Munzur trout, a fish species found nowhere else in the world.
