Keban Dam, Hydroelectric power station in Elazığ Province, Turkey
Keban Dam is a hydroelectric facility on the Euphrates River in Elazığ Province. The structure spans over a kilometer and uses the river's flow through multiple turbines to generate electricity.
Construction began in 1966 as Turkey's first major hydroelectric project on the Euphrates River. A French-Italian consortium undertook the building of this significant infrastructure.
The dam construction led to archaeological excavations between 1968 and 1974, uncovering multiple historical sites in the Euphrates Valley before flooding.
You can view the reservoir landscape from several vantage points around the facility. The best views come from the higher areas nearby, where you can see the lake created by the dam and the surrounding region.
Before the valley flooded, archaeological excavations were carried out to document and rescue historical sites in the area. These rescue digs revealed important traces of human settlement in the Euphrates region.
