Kömürhan Bridge, Cantilever bridge near Karakaya Dam, Turkey.
Kömürhan Bridge is a cantilever structure spanning 287 meters across the Euphrates River, connecting Malatya and Elazığ provinces in eastern Turkey. The bridge carries the D.300 highway above the Karakaya Dam Lake, allowing vehicles to traverse the waterway.
Built between 1983 and 1986, the bridge replaced an earlier concrete arch structure from 1932. Advanced cantilever techniques were applied to overcome the wide river crossing and reservoir conditions.
The bridge serves as a daily passage for travelers crossing between provinces in eastern Turkey. It represents the connection between remote communities through modern infrastructure.
The bridge is easily reached by car via the D.300 highway, but there is no separate pedestrian pathway, so walkers need to be cautious. Daytime visits are safest when the roadway is clearly visible to passing traffic.
The bridge was constructed using a balanced cantilever technique, allowing workers to build from both banks simultaneously without a central pier. This method was necessary to span the wide reservoir created by the dam.
