Great Mosque of Malatya, Ottoman mosque in Battalgazi, Turkey.
The Great Mosque of Malatya is a Seljuk mosque in Battalgazi featuring a spacious prayer hall decorated with ornate marble details and geometric patterns. A prominent minaret stands on the northwestern side of the structure.
The mosque was built in 1224 during the Seljuk period under Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad. It underwent significant changes during the Ottoman and Mamluk periods until the 19th century.
Inside, you will see exceptional examples of Seljuk brick craftsmanship with turquoise and purple ceramic mosaics adorning the iwan facade with Arabic inscriptions. This decoration shows the skilled handiwork that was passed down through generations.
The building is open daily for prayers and has separate entrances for men and women. Visitors should remove their shoes and dress appropriately before entering.
The building has three distinct portals from different periods, with the western portal bearing an inscription from 1247 crediting master craftsman Husrev. These doors tell the story of the different eras when the mosque was shaped.
