Hasankeyf Castle is a ruined fortress built on a tall rocky hill above the Tigris River in Hasankeyf, eastern Turkey. Its thick stone walls still stand in places, enclosing the outlines of old gates, towers, and building foundations.
The site has been occupied for thousands of years and served as a stronghold under rulers from the Urartu and Romans to various Islamic dynasties. In the 15th century, the Ayyubids added a carved stone gate that can still be seen today.
The castle is seen by many as a symbol of the long and layered history of this part of Turkey. Inside the walls, visitors can still spot the remains of old mosques and small lodges that point to the place's Islamic past.
Reaching the castle requires walking up a rocky hill, so sturdy footwear is strongly advised. Going in the morning is a good idea, as the heat is more bearable and the site is less crowded.
Carved into the rock beneath the castle, there are tunnels and secret water passages that were used for water supply and defense. Stepping inside, you feel a drop in temperature and hear the echo of footsteps in the narrow stone corridors.
