St. Mary Church, Syriac Orthodox church in Midyat district, Turkey
The Church of the Virgin Mary of Hah is a Syriac Orthodox church located in the village of Hah, also known as Anıtlı, in the Midyat district of southeastern Turkey. It features a square dome and a decorated bell tower near the entrance, making it one of the oldest surviving churches in the Tur Abdin region.
The church is believed to have first been built around 2,000 years ago, though the current structure dates to around the 6th century. A restoration in 1999 helped stabilize the building and preserve its original features.
The village of Hah is in the Midyat district and is easiest to reach by car. Visitor numbers rise in summer, especially around August 15, when a religious celebration draws people from the area and from abroad.
The dome was replaced in 1939 with a new one built with geometric forms, changing the look of the roof significantly. A short path through the village also leads to the remains of an even older church and a small cemetery where low graves are covered by vegetation.
