Sokolov, Industrial municipality in Karlovy Vary Region, Czech Republic.
Sokolov is a town in the Karlovy Vary Region situated where three rivers meet – the Ohre, Svatava, and Lobezsky brook – and surrounded by hills. It stands at 401 meters elevation and offers numerous sports facilities including indoor and outdoor pools, an ice arena, and multiple sports halls.
The town was first documented in 1279 and originally bore the name Falknov nad Ohří until a name change in 1948. This shift reflected major transformations that swept through the region in the post-World War II era.
The town museum inside Sokolov Castle displays the region's mining heritage through exhibits about minerals and local wildlife. These collections reflect how deeply mining shaped daily life and community identity here.
The town is easily accessible and offers public sports facilities open to visitors, including swimming pools and fitness centers. Spring through autumn are ideal for outdoor activities, while winter visitors can enjoy ice skating and indoor sports during the colder months.
Lake Michal on the eastern edge was created from an abandoned coal pit and now serves as a recreation site. This transformation shows how industrial scars were converted into community gathering spots.
