Štifterův Pomník, Cultural monument on Plöckenstein Mountain, Czech Republic.

Stifter's Monument is a 14.5-metre granite obelisk on a rock ledge above the north-west shore of Plešné Lake, at 1,311 metres. Its west face bears Stifter's name and a tribute, the south and north sides carry verses from his works, and the lake-facing side shows the construction date.

The monument was built in 1876 and 1877 under architect Heinrich Ferstel's direction using granite sourced from the local area. This construction period reflected the tradition of erecting memorials to honor important cultural figures in the region.

The west face carries Stifter's name and a tribute; the south side quotes his poem Im Gebirge and the north side his story Der Hochwald. The lake-facing side bears the construction date. The monument was consecrated on 26 August 1877.

Reaching this monument requires a hike of several hours from the parking area at Oberschwarzenberg, so plan accordingly for the journey. The location sits in a border region, so bringing valid identification documents is advisable for your visit.

After World War II the border fence ran just a few metres from the obelisk, between it and the frontier, so the site stayed closed to the public for decades. Access became possible again only with the political change of 1989/90; today the monument lies in Šumava National Park and can be reached on foot from all three neighbouring countries.
